Let love be your highest goal! But you should also desire the special abilities the Spirit gives—especially the ability to prophesy.
1 Corinthians 14:1
What exactly is prophecy?
“Speaking the thoughts of God” is the most beautiful translation of the Greek word propheteia. When you have the Holy Spirit living in you, you can hear His voice. When you speak out these thoughts you are prophesying.
There is a difference between the ‘gift of prophecy’ and the ‘office of prophet’. A prophet is called by God to be a representative for the people on His behalf. These messages to the people often have a predictive character, but that is not always the case. For example, many prophets in the Old Testament called for repentance.
Why prophecy is so important
We can all hear God’s voice, we can all strive for it. We want to encourage you to learn to hear God’s voice more and more. God wants to talk to each of us. For this it is important that you have an intimate relationship with Him.
A prophecy you receive from someone else often confirms what you have already heard from God. That is nice, then you can be sure that what you have heard from God is correct, and it can provide clarity in the steps you want to take in your life. Sometimes through a personal prophecy you can hear things about your position in the future, which are new to you and have not yet occurred. Such words are difficult to test at the time, only time will tell.
Write down a prophecy you receive
A good tip we would like to give you is to write down and keep all the things you hear from God yourself, or through someone else. When you pick up those notes at a later time, it is nice to see whether it has come true. What is also encouraging is that when you receive the same words from several people, you know that these words really come from God.
